But Who is St Valentine Anyway?
But why should your customers buy lingerie? What should they buy? Who is St. Valentine anyway?!
Alterego Lingerie’s Customer Services got to the bottom of it all. It seems that St. Valentine was a Roman Bishop, who lived during the third century, during the reign of Claudius II. Claudius did not want his soldiers to have their heads ‘turned’ during their on-going wars, so banned weddings. Valentine the Bishop, and avid apiarist, had other ideas however, and performed secret wedding ceremonies. So, as he spread so much love, in 1537, King Henry VII officially declared February 14th as St. Valentine’s Feast Day – and it has stuck ever since. It was traditionally the day of the pagan fertility festival of Lupercalia, where naked men ran through streets spanking the backsides of young women with the idea that it would improve their fertility! We don’t think either St. Valentine or Henry were necessarily ‘into’ lingerie much at that time, they would probably be surprised how things turned out.
